How Roof Costs Are Estimated
Roofing projects are usually priced per roofing square (100 sq ft). This calculator applies price ranges for materials, labor, tear-off and disposal to your waste-adjusted square count, and shows a low-to-high planning range instead of a single false-precision number.
Cost Structure
- Materials: material price range × squares (asphalt shingles or metal roofing)
- Labor: labor rate × squares
- Tear-off: removal of the existing roof (optional)
- Disposal: dumpster / debris haul-away (optional)
Worked Example
A 1,677 sq ft roof with 10% waste ≈ 18.4 squares. At $200–$320 per square for asphalt materials and a $250 labor rate, expect a planning range of roughly $10,000–$14,800 including tear-off and disposal — actual quotes will vary.

Price ranges are national averages derived from Angi (2026) and cross-checked against Fixr (2026), refreshed quarterly. Multi-story homes, steep pitches, permits and repairs to underlying decking are not included. This is not a contractor quote.

Why do you show a range instead of an exact price?
No online calculator can know your local labor market, roof condition or contractor pricing. A range is honest; a precise number would be false precision.
What is the most expensive part of a roof replacement?
For asphalt shingle roofs, labor typically rivals or exceeds material cost. Metal roofing flips the balance toward materials.
