How Many Nails Do You Need?
Roofing nails are driven by hand or with a coil nailer, and the count is driven by the shingle area. The standard 4-nail pattern uses about 320 nails per square; steep-slope and high-wind areas require a 6-nail pattern, which uses about 480 nails per square. Ridge and hip shingles need nails on top of that.

Worked Example
A 26.4-square roof with a 40 ft ridge in a 4-nail configuration needs 8,448 field nails plus 100 ridge nails, for 8,548 total. At 7,200 nails per coil box that is 1.19 boxes, so order 2 boxes — the second box covers waste, bent nails and future repairs.
