How to Calculate Roofing Squares
A roofing square is the standard unit of measurement in the American roofing industry: 1 roofing square = 100 square feet of roof area. Shingles, underlayment and most roofing labor are priced per square.
Formula
- Roofing Squares = Roof Area ÷ 100
- Waste-Adjusted Squares = (Roof Area × (1 + Waste %)) ÷ 100
Worked Example
A 2,400 sq ft roof = 2,400 ÷ 100 = 24 roofing squares. With a 10% waste factor: 2,640 ÷ 100 = 26.4 squares — order 27 squares of material (always round up).
