Why Starter Strip Matters
Starter strip runs along the eaves before the first course of shingles. It seals the exposed shingle tabs that would otherwise be glued over the drip edge, and it gives the first course a straight, wind-resistant edge. Starter strip is measured along the eaves only — not the full perimeter.

2 × (50 + 30) = 160 lin ft
Worked Example
A 50 × 30 ft gable roof has 100 linear feet of eave. With 10% waste that becomes 110 linear feet. A self-adhered starter roll covers about 105 linear feet, so 110 ÷ 105 = 1.05 — you need 2 rolls (buying one roll leaves no margin for a bad seam).

Assumptions & Limitations
Assumes starter strip along eaves only, as intended. Roofs with rake starter detail, valleys, or multiple sections need additional material. Overhang beyond the wall line increases eave length slightly and is not modeled. Planning purposes only.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does starter strip go on the rakes too?
Standard practice is eaves only. Some installers add starter at rake edges for extra wind resistance, which increases the quantity — add that length separately if your installer specifies it.
Can I skip starter strip?
It is required by most shingle manufacturers to keep the warranty valid, and it improves wind performance at the eave. Skipping it is not recommended.
How many linear feet is a roll of starter strip?
About 105 linear feet for typical self-adhered starter rolls. Check the label — some products are sold in shorter lengths.
